Shakakan Wall is a series of single pitch rock climbing walls in the David Thompson Area. The wall is right off the highway and looks over Abhraham Lake, so theres always a nice view!
This is a great place to start climbing. The pitches range from 5.5 – 5.8, and because there single pitch is makes for a very relaxing day to practice your technics and get a feel for what climbing is all about.
If you have a lead climber, and are looking to just get a taste this is your place! Its pretty quiet too, you may have the whole place to yourself or only have 1 or 2 other groups. Unlike around the Banff/Louise area where your going to be sharing with hundreds! The rock isn’t to worn in yet either! Which makes for a better stick.
If you have never done any type of climbing, but are looking to try it out. I recommend starting in a climbing gym, they can offer you belay classes and technic courses. Than I would book a Via Farretta excursion. Mt. Norquay offers them, and they are a little pricey, but so is rock climbing! They can hook you up with the needed gear and you’ll a good feel. This is not technic sensitive as you just climb up pre-fab rebar steps put into the mountain.
